One Hundred Years

May 18, 2007

Now that the battle plan for Secret Wars has been laid out, I think I want to spend the next week or so polishing up my draft of the Avatar game. I want to think a bit more about “counterpoint framing” and my other ideas for the emo pirates before I start really implementing it. I suspect it’s going to be somewhat difficult, since it’s roleplaying technique that’s completely unfamiliar to me (though I’m sure some groups already do it, especially in larps).

Shreyas has offered to organize a playtest of the Avatar game, which got me thinking about what my ideal playtest campaign for it would be. I think it would go something like this:

It is 90 years before the beginning of the Avatar TV series. Aang, the Avatar, has disappeared and has not been seen in 10 years. Firelord Sozin has begun a military build up that is unprecedented in Fire Nation history. There are rumors that he plans to strike soon against the Earth Kingdom, Air Nomads, and Southern Water Tribe. Many different interests are searching for the Avatar, hoping to find him and enlist his aid in stopping Sozin’s plans, including members of the Fire Nation opposed to the increasing militancy and totalitarianism of Sozin’s reign. Additionally, a massive comet is on the way…

Characters:

  • Bumi, black sheep prince of Omashu, friend of the missing Avatar
  • Kuzon of the Fire Nation, friend of the missing Avatar
  • Prince Azulon, working on behalf of his father to “make sure the Avatar never returns”
  • Air Nomads searching for their missing champion
  • Water Tribe members, some of whom are sincerely looking for the Avatar while others secretly hope to kill the Avatar (or discover that he is already dead) so the mantle will pass to one of their own (Water is the next element in the Avatar Cycle)

Who wants to play?

Edit: If this time period is that of the grandparents of the current Avatar protagonists, that means that Kanna and Pakku are around too, and would be good Northern Water Tribe characters.

Other possible Fire Nation characters who might be alive then include Jeong Jeong, Ilah (Azulon’s future wife), and the twin sisters Li and Lo.
